Excellent new facilities exist at the University of Birmingham for both NMR
spectroscopy and mass spectrometry based metabolomics.
Henry Wellcome Building for Biomolecular NMR Spectroscopy (HWB•NMR)
This purpose-designed NMR facility houses state-of-the-art instrumentation including two 500 MHz, three 600 MHz, 800 MHz and 900 MHz NMR spectrometers, including cryoprobes. Automated sample changers facilitate high throughput metabolomics research. In addition this facility has been established as a European High Throughput NMR Centre for Metabolomics and Ligand Discovery. The HWB•NMR provides an excellent collaborative environment for research in the areas of biomolecular NMR spectroscopy and metabolomics, and is managed and operated by a staff of five highly experienced NMR scientists. School of Biosciences Mass Spectrometry Facility for Metabolomics and Proteomics
This facility includes three Thermo Fisher Scientific mass spectrometers for both discovery based and targeted analyses. The discovery instruments include an ultra-high resolution LTQ FT Ultra mass spectrometer and an Orbitrap Velos, both with Triversa chip-based nanoelectrospray sources (Advion Biosciences) and HPLCs (Dionex). Targeted metabolite analysis can be conducted using our TSQ Vantage triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, also equipped with a Dionex HPLC and Triversa nanoelectrospray source.
